Livin' In Sin Party

To celebrate the holiday season this year, Katie, Pico and I threw a Livin' In Sin Party where all the attendees had to bring a piece of art with the three of us "Livin' In Sin." The party was a great success and the artwork far surpassed our expectations. Thanks to everyone. Enjoi!

On Jan. 5th, to celebrate my friends Matt Zitman and Stacy Pierce visiting, I will be holding the first of many So-Cal Sketch Crawls here in San Diego. Any and all people are welcome to jump in & out at any time throughout the day at our many stops in SD. The plan is to start at breakfast and run until we can't stand it anymore. The loose plan is to visit the beach, downtown, Mission area, and many others all while filling up our sketch books with drawings, paintings, group collaborations, spilled coffee and adrenaline. I'll be the first to admit that Blogs are like luxury cars to me. I love them. I'm addicted to looking at them and noting to my friends about how I saw a ferrari or a lambo on the street. I love driving them. The exhilaration of power and design meeting. But no matter how many times I take one for a test drive I have never bought one. Not once. Blogs are a lot like that for me. I see the advantage. I check everyone else's on a regular basis but to find a new post on my blog is like finding a virgin in the playboy mansion, only not as exciting or as worth it. I am writing this post to talk about something I usually don't. Movies. More specifically, Kevin Smith Movies. I can no longer sit and quietly listen. This is my take.

Kevin Smith movies are for people who have never lived their own exciting life and are impressed by any moment of raunchy teen dream realization. The audience is filled with boys who were willing to peel themselves off the 360 controller long enough to imagine that they could be the star of any said movie by Silent Bob, a character which only plays further in my favor of the pointed awkward male connection.

The spark of this forest fire lies solely on the recent smith giving of "Zack and Miri make a Porno." This movie lacked any real feeling at all like most smith movies. I went in wanting to like it. I like Seth Rogen and I love Elizabeth Banks, I literally love porno but this movie made all three feel like when your mom walks in on you beating off. You wanted it to be good, but you end u feeling sorry for yourself and the old man you paid. The best character in the movie was Justin Long and he had about a 5 minute part. Now, I dont blame the actors, I blame the writer. If you can make porno boring, well, you need to be drawn and quartered.

The film was less than unfunny and just came off as a safe movie disguised as a raunchy one. I have funnier friends than this movie and I honestly think thats what Kevin Smith thought before he started making films but guess what, his friends...not that funny. Save your dough people.

Besides, the inevitable "Uncut-Unfiltered" DVD will probably satisfy your needs more just because it's bound to have more tits in it.

Prima donnas and close minded single sided young minds. Getting older is shitty to some but for me it's the best thing that ever happened. My blog is going to change completely soon.

So I've thought of it and this is the best way I can describe what I am going through with in park caricatures. Being a caricature artist is sort of like being a magician. You have learned a skill that most people think they will never learn and that ups the the value of what you do and what people are willing to pay for it. So day after day you wow people with your tricks and games and it never fails to deliver. Some days the crowd is more tame and some days you get a standing ovation but all in all it's a game that pays off. The problem is, from the magicians point of view there is absolutely no surprises. He knows the trick, he knows where the smoke and mirrors are and what they do. He simply follows a step by step "how to" procedure. Now there are exceptional magicians out there in the world but I challenge you to name 10. 10 is a ridicously small number and I bet you can't name 10. There are not that many great ones out there. What is out there are a bunch of mediocre birthday party magicians that have found a niche and have exploited it. Thats where I feel I am in caricatures. I have found an easy way to make the money in the park and I have a hard time straying away from it to blow people away with the art. I have done this too long to believe that people know the difference. They really don't. BUT, even if they did, it's not really about knowing the difference, it's about personal preference. Maybe Dad gets what you are doing but he might not want his wife looking like Pat Morita. It's not about you...it's about them. This might seem jaded and cranky but it's where I am and not where I want to be. Outside of work I feel I strive to make every line count in my work. I enjoy it and without sounding cocky, I think for the most part I am successful in portraying my vision on paper. I guess I just got busy and lazy at the same time. I have to make every second count at work and when I have missed 3 hours of drawing time at the stand because I had to run and get cotton balls for body art, I put myself into hyper mode and try to catch up to the other artists. I feel bad though, I can hear the other artists sort of begging me to snap out of it. Like a little kid wanting their sports hero to come out of retirement. I'm no hero, or even sporty, but that look of dissapointment when I draw is enough for me to understand what they all think. Maybe the days of greatness are gone. Maybe I was right to retire and just coach. Maybe I could coach and play at the same time. Maybe I need to find a rabbit in the hat that I never knew was there.
